Art at the airport. #ARTport Gallery is open!

15.04.2025

An art gallery has been opened in the terminal of the Łódź airport. On Monday, the vernissage of the exhibition “Aviations” by multimedia artist Maciej Salamon took place.

The ARTport Gallery is located on the first floor of the terminal, and its name is a play on words: AIRport/ARTport. The airport will make this new space available to artists for temporary exhibitions, to passengers as a way to spend time before departure in an atmosphere of art and relaxation, and to all residents of Łódź.

The “Aviations” exhibition was created in collaboration with the AOKZ Gallery, located in Łódź on Włókiennicza Street. It was founded by Maciej Domarecki and Grzegorz Jarosz.

"Running a narrative museum, we care about communication and reaching out to very different people in very different situations. We often step outside the space of our gallery. This time, we experienced a wonderful synchronicity—almost Jungian—the intersection of the possibilities, needs, and philosophy of the Łódź airport with our own idea. Maciej Salamon, an artist we deeply admire both intellectually and formally, is a passionate explorer of the issues surrounding aviation. That’s how this mega-exhibition came to be," says Maciej Domarecki, founder of the AOKZ Gallery.

"The airport, beyond its primary function, also wants to serve a cultural role, engaging the local community. Although we have more connections now, the large space in the terminal is not yet fully used commercially. It just so happened that the AOKZ Gallery was looking for a venue for Maciej Salamon’s exhibition titled ‘Aviations’. The title fits our space perfectly. Flying and art are two different ways of expressing the same desire: to rise above the axiom and see the world from a completely different perspective. It’s a search for freedom, beauty, and an attempt to master the fleeting nature of time. Experiencing art, like flying, means crossing boundaries—physical, sensory, and intellectual. I encourage everyone to enjoy our joint project and to be swept away by the emotions that—I'm sure—will accompany everyone in their next, different journeys," said Dr. Anna Midera, CEO of Łódź Airport.

Maciej Salamon, the first artist whose works are exhibited at the ARTport Gallery, is a native of Gdańsk and the head of the Intermedia Department at the Faculty of Sculpture and Intermedia at the Gdańsk Academy of Fine Arts. He works in painting, graphic art, music, and illustration. He is the vocalist and guitarist of the necropop duo Nagrobki. He creates animated music videos, for which he has received numerous awards. His works have been exhibited in Berlin, Warsaw, Gdańsk, and Szczecin.
